BLAENAVON CARNIVAL RESIDENCY (June 2008) 

Two week long residency based in Blaenavon with open access community workshops : culminates in large scale parade as centerpiece of Blaenavon World Heritage Day 2008.

CARDIFF MAS CARNIVAL (July / August 2008) 

 

The 19th annual Cardiff MAS Carnival brings Cardiff City Centre alive with hundreds of flamboyant costumes and carnival creations, masks and headpieces, giant puppets on backpacks and mobile sculptures – all dancing dynamically through the streets of Cardiff with a finale presentation at The Big Weekend on City Hall Lawns.

Cardiff MAS Carnival 2008 is called “BEHIND THE MASK" and will use masks from across the globe to explore issues of Cultural Identity.

During Carnival your everyday 'mask' slips, so expect a cavalcade of spectacular Giant Masks as the masqueraders reveal their true selves...

The three-week MAS camp will return for a sixth year to the Butetown Youth Pavilion developing further a renewed relationship with the Butetown community as well as remaining an open access project on a city-wide basis.

MAS Camp : Butetown Youth Pavilion, Dumballs Road, Cardiff Bay

LAUNCH EVENING: Tuesday 15th July  6.00 – 8.30pm

MAS CAMP OPENING HOURS: Daily (except Sundays) from 12 midday – 9pm Wednesday 16th July – Friday 1st August

MAS CAMP WORKSHOPS :

FREE – All ages welcome.

Children under 12 will need to be accompanied by an adult.

Children over 12 will have to have a signed parental permission slip if attending without an adult.

 

A chance to get involved with all aspects the Carnival including costume design and making, Carnival Street dance, African Drumming, and the Soca Street Band.

No experience required – artists support is available at all times.

 

CARNIVAL DAY : Saturday 2nd August.

Call time 10.00am

Parade starts promptly at 12.00-midday from Butetown Youth Pavilion.

Over 1,000 costumed revelers dance and drum up Bute Street and through The Hayes and on to The Big Weekend on City Hall Lawns at 2.00pm.

           

Carnival stage will include MAS Parade Presentation.

SWANSEA MAS CARNIVAL (August 2008)

10th ANNIVERSARY

Now in its 10th ANNIVERSARY year, the project returns for an open access three-week MAS camp at Swansea College’s Llwyn-y-Bryn site.

This will be the sixth year involving Swansea College as a formal project partner and it is intended to build upon the pioneering work undertaken together in 2003 whereby community participants are able to undertake Open College Network awards, all integrated into the MAS-making process.

South Wales Intercultural Community Arts (SWICA) brings the City Centre alive with the 10th ANNIVERSARY annual multicultural MAS Carnival featuring hundreds of costumed revellers.

MAS CAMP Launch : Tuesday 5th August  - 6.30 – 8.30pm

 

MAS CAMP WORKSHOPS : Daily Wednesday 6th – Friday 22nd August (except Sundays) from 12 midday – 9pm

Parade starts promptly at 2.00pm from Swansea College, via the Kingsway and Wind Street before arriving at our new finale location in the grounds of the Waterfront Museum.

 

ENJOY Over 1,000 costumed revelers dance and drum through the streets to the Waterfront Museum !

 

                  

                                              

                                                        

                                                       

The project culminates in the community-based highlight of the Swansea Bay Summer Festival : parade, costumed section presentations and staged performance in Castle Square on Saturday 23rd August 2008.
